An Identity Crisis Is Vital For Growth Because It Occurs At The Edge Of Chaos And Harmony
Internal Conflict Triggered By Chaos
It was the developmental psychologist Erik Erikson who first coined the term identity crisis.
He formulated eight key stages one undergoes through their adolescent years based on their psychosocial development.
They are:
Stage 1 - Trust vs. Mistrust
Stage 2 - Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
Stage 3 - Initiative vs. Guilt
Stage 4 - Industry vs. Inferiority
Stage 5 - Identity vs. Confusion
Stage 6 - Intimacy vs. Isolation
Stage 7 - Generativity vs. Stagnation
Stage 8 - Integrity vs. Despair
Erikson believed a person's personality develops in a series of stages. His model differs to Freud's in that social interactions and relationships impact an individual's development and growth throughout their life.
Each stage builds on the previous one which creates the foundations for growth in the following years.
At each stage, a person experiences internal conflicts, thus creating a turning point in the individual's personality.
The conflicts are based on the understanding that an individual experiences growth or fails to develop these qualities.
In the educational book Key Concepts in Counselling and Psychotherapy: A Critical A-Z Guide to Theory author Vicki Smith gives a clear understanding of how an identity crisis can become a source of power within the individual's psyche: "He (Erikson) believed that we all have identity crises at one time or another in our lives and that these crises do not necessarily represent a negative state but can be a driving force toward positive resolution."
If they integrate the conflicts into their personality, the subsequent growth and development will serve them later in life. If they don't develop these abilities, they are likely to suffer an inhibited sense of self which dominates their life.
Erikson's understanding is that an individual becomes competent when moving through the eight stages and integrates the egoic self into their psyche.
In a similar vein, author Jan Frazier explains in The Freedom of Being: At Ease with What Is the need to transcend the ego by stepping outside the known sense of self: "In order to look at yourself, you have to step outside of it. Look not with the eyes of the ego, but with the eyes of presence."
The Ego Is Not Meant To Dominate Your Life
Many people identify with outer aspects of their life as the basis to their identity.
For example, an individual may believe their role is that of a mother and wife. Yet, if their husband is unfaithful and the marriage dissolves, they will question their identity since they no longer associate with that label.
Similarly, others presume their work, relationships, physical appearance, social and wealth status or performance are measures of their identity.
Regrettably, if these aspects are removed from their life, they experience an identity crisis because they created a persona around them.
I would argue these qualities do not shape your identity but are a vehicle in which to explore your life's narrative.
Your ego is the identity the mind constructs to define itself, yet this is a fictional narrative because external events can disrupt it.
Jan Frazier reaffirms how the roles you play do not construct your identity since there is an underlying presence beneath that: "The roles you play, the features you exhibit, the things you believe in - while they matter very much in the ordinary realm of human discourse - are not what you are. When presence senses itself within you, none of these things have any substance."
Your true identity lies beneath the shadow of the egoic self. An identity crisis is vital to an individual's growth because it allows for chaos and order to reveal one's authentic nature.
An identity crisis can be likened to the shell of an egg breaking open. The shell merely gives form to the ego so it can make sense of its role within society.
The ego is not meant to dominate your life, nor do you wish to banish it. It must be integrated with the authentic self to develop the wholeness of who you are.
Otherwise, the egoic self you once identified with is no longer something you can uphold.
Don't Try To Make Sense Of Chaos
To paint a contrasting view, psychotherapist and meditation teacher Loch Kelly writes in Shift into Freedom: The Science and Practice of Open-Hearted Awareness how consciousness creates a thinker to uphold the ego, thus forming a mistaken identity in the process: "Afflictive consciousness creates a thinker out of thinking and ego function, and this thought-based sense of self forms the core of mistaken identity. Nothing more than a self-referential loop of thinking about thinking, our mistaken identity is actually a continuous conceptual proliferation that creates solid things out of images and a solid self out of thinking."
What is essential is to unmask the egoic self so the pain, suffering and uncertainty are the underpinnings for future growth and development.
It is like the progress of performance athletes experience when training for the Olympics. They must push to the edge of their limits and discover their potential or risk remaining where they are.
If they push too far too soon, they may invoke physical injury that can sideline them. They may become depressed as a result because their identity is formed around their status of an athlete and performance.
However, from a developmental viewpoint, the experience can be vital to their performance if they can let go of their fixed narrative and former identity.
If you experienced an identity crisis, trust in the deeper psychological lesson guiding your personal development.
Don't try to make sense of the chaos, but surrender to the process, knowing whatever is breaking apart is doing so to make way for the true self to emerge.
To live a remarkable life, you must take consistent action in spite of your fears and doubts. Download a FREE copy of my motivational eBook, NAVIGATE LIFE and embark upon your journey of greatness today!

There Is an Upside to Failure
Why Failure is Not the End
Sometimes when we fail we feel it is the end of the world. There is not one person on the planet Earth that has never failed in his life. The truth is that everyone fails once or many times in their life. You are not alone in this process of failing. It is normal to fail with your business, or your lover, or your friends. But, when you will fail, keep in mind that you are not alone in this and that you should keep moving forward.
There is a reason behind every failure
Failing is all about learning. It is all part of the process - the learning to move forward. Think of Albert Einstein to tried 1001 times to create the light-bulb. His vision and sense of purpose failed him forward.
It isn't always fun when things don't work out the way we planned. It is totally normal to feel de-motivated, without any enthusiasm and willingness to keep going in one thing that you have really want to feel some sense of purpose.
You know how they say: "If you fail 9 times, the 10th time will be a successful one"! The process of failing is difficult.
However, when you fail, feelings of disappointment, why try, de-motivation are seemed real. But, before you decide not to again try, keep in mind that failing is not the end.
When you think that you are on something, fail forward, work with enthusiasm, vision, and purpose, the end results will be what you expected.
Failure is Purposeful
It is often difficult to keep up the motivation. Your sense of purpose can seem illusory as if dreaming. It exists to remind you of what you really want from your life, career, relationship and friendship. When you envisage your dreams as purposeful, a spark of motivation and enthusiasm increases. Your heart is starting to beat faster and faster. You are feeling alive again!
All this is because your vision is an open door to your inner wisdom. Even if you fail once another path will be shown waiting for you just around the corner.
Nothing is lost, you just need to give yourself a chance to keep in your mind's eye all the situations you want to see, when everything seems so negative and without any sense of purpose.
You will feel tired of pushing yourself and stay motivated. Do not worry, nothing is lost.
Whenever you are unsure of what direction to take time to sit quietly. Ask your most pressing question and sit in your heart. Breathe deeply into your heart space, a place of knowing. Through practice you will change your neural pathways into a more coherent state. As well, the answer will come without all the negative self talk we often tell ourselves.

Alternative Work for Any Profession
We all need to earn additional income. Who would not want additional cash on their wallet? In this day and age, people from all walks of life need additional income, even those who have acquired their degree. What are the possible ways to earn for any profession?
Freelance Article Writer
The internet's full of it. Thank you for Google's update, a website should always have fresh content to make it relevant. A person who practices their profession is an expert on their own. Who would better describe teaching methods than a teacher? Who can better explain illness and expected treatments than a nurse or a doctor? Who can better identify problems in behavior than a psychologist? Information is a commodity that the internet is selling like pies. A professional can write a dichotomy of a variety of subjects. There is always a need for someone to explain an aspect of the profession and in terms that the layman can understand. This is one channel a professional can learn additional income.
Teaching
How do students become teachers, doctors or nurses? They were guided and taught by people who gained knowledge and skills from the same profession. A nurse can study and gain the needed certification to provide classroom teaching. The nurse does not need to stop being a nurse in a hospital or a clinic. The nurse can simply come in for the classroom lecture or supervise students in the clinical area.
Consultancy Services
The knowledge and skills that a professional acquires through years of experience in their field can be used to guide other professionals. For instance, a professional with a doctorate can provide consultancy services for a specified amount of fee to professionals that are completing their thesis or dissertations. They can also provide solutions for an individual or a company wanting to address conflicts in their organization.
Write a book
For someone who has a lot of time in their hands, writing a book can be an avenue for additional earnings. While this may take time for some, when the book gets published and the target audience starts subscribing or buying the book, the income will continue for years, until a new one is published.
An individual is limited only by their set of values. Additional income is always welcome, but it does not have to be a new job with better pay. A professional can always give advice and provide knowledge for a specified amount of fee without leaving the security of their current job.

Remember "Why"
"He who has a why to live can bear with almost any how" -Friedrich Nietzsche
Have you ever been in a situation where you carry on with your life, perhaps you have a job, you get up every morning go to work, come back to your family and carry this on for a year or two and all of a sudden one day on a lonely day or a quite day you feel empty and ask yourself "Why, What and Who?" Why do you do the things you do? What do you live for? Who are you? and what do you really what to accomplish. Such a feeling of emptiness and questioning yourself is usually a self-reflection point in your life. Life can get routinal and at times we live on autopilot every day and forget the purpose regarding our lives. This in a long term or even short term can leave us feeling empty without hope.
I would like to remind you to be purposeful about the intent of your life. Remember why you are where you are and you do what you do. Why you have your spouse as a life partner, remember the reasons you had that made you feel that they are suitable to live life with you, why you feel important about your children and what you would like them to accomplish in life and what you would like to teach them. The most important person is you, what is your purpose, how would you like to be remembered in this life, what would you like to contribute. Having this form of self-reflection can help you live life with a sense of purpose and more intentfully. This will help you live happier and fulfilled. When you feel happier and fulfilled you are more likely to pursue and achieve your life goals.
Get up each day remembering why you do the things you do. Take time to meditate on your life, this will give you energy and the enthusiasm to pursue your dreams. Without remembering "why" you risk living a life that at times can feel purposeless. Without purpose, as human beings we are doomed to give up on everything and feel unhappier. Find your why, reach your goals and live a fulfilling life. The best time to start is not an hour later or tomorrow, start now.
Remember to remain inspired, to move all obstacles standing in your way of success and do not dare give up on yourself or your dreams.

Are You Thinking Ahead to Post-Corona Life?
Many of you focus on how to survive the next few months.
I'm not knocking it - this is a crazy time, so it pays to have a strategy.
Having said that...
Are you thinking about what comes next?
For when the world returns to more-or-less normal?
Because it will return. With every crisis, folk said it would change everything forever. But let's not exaggerate it. 9/11 changed the world... and even so, things mostly returned to normal. Same again with 2008 and (for some Americans) Trump's election and a dozen other catastrophes.
The 'new normal' is always closer to the old normal than it might seem.
This pandemic is no different. It will break because pandemics always do. The first-hit countries are already bouncing back - the rest of us have to wait it out. I doubt the coronavirus will ever disappear, but it won't dominate forever. It can't.
I'm sure the smart entrepreneurs and executives are thinking ahead to when crowds become a thing again.
How about you?
When I say things will return to normal, I'm talking on average. For some folk, this experience will break them. They'll get used to isolation and keep up that habit, long into the future.
Why go out to restaurants, when junk food can arrive at your door?
What's the point of playing board games, after a few months of bingeing on video games?
Who cares about cinemas when the internet is right here?
Some folk will spend the rest of their lives exercising less, getting less fresh air and sun, and refusing physical contact at all costs.
The rest of you?
You're thinking of all the things you took for granted - even something as small as going to a restaurant with friends.
You're going to travel more and explore more.
Social distancing can't end soon enough, and when it does you're going to shake every hand. Maybe even hug more. Why not?
You're going to get out into nature, exercise more, have healthier hobbies and embrace every moment.
Maybe you'll even quit that job you hate (because look what getting locked in a box with recycled air got you?) or at least use this to work more flexibly.
I'm lucky enough to have money coming in still, so I'm saving money for some training and travel. You better believe I'm watching the number of active cases in each country, looking forward to the day we're all free again.
That day will come slower if you languish.
If you atrophy on the couch.
If you invest in yourself, though?
In your mind, your body, your emotions and your finances?
You'll be out the door and in the sunshine while everyone else is rubbing the sleep from their eyes.

Why Those Who Are Most Responsive To Change, Will Always Thrive
Go With The Natural Flow Of Events
What are you resisting right now in your life? Is it the sudden change of circumstances in relation to the Coronavirus? Is it something you're missing out on, such as being in contact with loved ones, a friend, work colleagues or others? What negative emotions are you experiencing as a result? Is it anger, frustration, anxiety, fear or something else? How are you responding to them?
I realise I'm asking a lot of questions but it's important we understand what is the cause of our emotions. Now, granted, you might say I'm angry and frustrated being isolated from others against my will. And you wouldn't be wrong to feel this way, however what is the fundamental reason behind it? You see, the emotions you're experiencing may not only be attributed to separation. There could be something deeper beneath the surface that warrants your investigation. It is my experience, working with individuals over the years, that those who are most responsive to change always thrive.
These are people who are psychologically flexible and embrace what life throws at them. It doesn't mean they like what is happening. And I'm not suggesting you like what is taking place either because that would be remiss of me. What I am inviting you to do, is accept your current conditions to the best of your ability and make the most of it. Is this something you're willing to give your attention to? Could you entertain the idea that you needn't like your current circumstances but stop resisting it?
Resistance is futile because ultimately reality trumps our struggles and emotions. And who says life ought to meet our expectations of how things should unfold? Life is a self-sustaining system, operating with its own natural laws. We must learn to abide by them because we are a drop in an ocean of a vast cosmic intelligence, working tirelessly to maintain order. But sometimes, what we initially experience is chaos expanding to create order. It makes it easier if we stop fighting what is happening and go with the natural flow of events. This is what is meant by being grateful. It's the idea of looking for hidden gems contained within unexpected events.
Life Is Not Personal
Assuredly, what we give our attention to becomes our focal point. So, if you direct your attention to unpleasant circumstances, you will find evidence of it (confirmation bias) and call it into your experience. But this comes at a cost to your well-being, which is paramount to your mental and physical health. Responding to change affirmatively means that even though circumstances are not as we like them to be, we can turn misfortune into triumph. It means looking for the silver lining in every experience, even if we have to look hard, there will always be a positive lesson.
Listen, life is unfair. When we were protected by our parents or guardians as youngsters, we may have assumed life was fair. But we mature and discover through heartbreak, setbacks and disappointments, life is anything but fair. This is because life is not personal. Read that again and mark it somewhere on your computer or smartphone. Life is not personal. You are part of life's ecosystem and when you cooperate and collaborate with this energetic force, circumstances will benefit you.
So, back to my earlier questions about what you're resisting right now. How can you take that experience and find a hidden treasure amongst it? Could you give yourself the gift of sitting with your negative emotions, to explore what is at the heart of your resistance? I assure you, this practice alone, can change your life more than you realise.
It will empower you to control your emotions and understand their underlying motive. You needn't struggle with life because doing so means resisting the gifts it brings. Those gifts will seldom come in the form you hope for. They are often disguised as: hardship, pain, struggle and disappointment and requires we face them with optimism instead resistance. I often asked myself: Why do some people struggle with change while others take it in their stride? Why don't these people let their experiences get them down? What do they know that others don't?
I'm not convinced that successful people are any wiser or more intelligent than the rest of us. I'm certain however, they have experienced heartache, suffering and misfortunes to know that hardships don't come to disturb our peace, but to anchor us in our resilience and sharpen the saw of our character. That is why those who are most responsive to change will thrive because they move with their circumstances and make the most of it. So, give that gift to yourself right now. Give yourself the gift of sitting with your emotions for 30 minutes, to explore what is really going on beneath the surface. Give yourself the gift of unlocking your true wisdom. It is only then you will realise that thriving isn't a state of mind but a way of being in the world.

Is it something you're missing out on, such as being in contact with loved ones, a friend, work colleagues or others? What negative emotions are you experiencing as a result? Is it anger, frustration, anxiety, fear or something else? How are you responding to them?

Finding YOUR Courage in 2020
If you want to make big moves in 2020, you have to take risks. But taking risks isn't easy, and it puts most people in uncharted territory. Uncharted territory can, in turn, often feel dangerous and cumbersome. The human mind loves familiarity, as familiarity usually means safety in some form as well as access to resources. This love of familiarity is literally hardwired into our brains from childhood. During our evolution, those who could remember where water holes and predators were located, well, they had a better day!
Tossing all of this familiarity aside and deciding to take risks and think outside the box can be very difficult and feel scary. Yet, it is critical that you realize that this is exactly what you may need to do to reach whatever goals you have set for yourself. Taking bold and decisive action at the right moment in time may be what separates you from the fulfilling life you want and living a life that is less than what you dream. Oddly enough, walking away from the security of the known and into the insecurity of the unknown is likely what you'll need to do to achieve your goals and/or happiness.
Risks are not "one-size fits all" affairs. If you are not accustomed to taking any risks at all, then even a small risk may seem huge. Keep this fact in mind as you move forward. You need to first think about what the risk is you are contemplating and then measure that risk against reality. Will your business or livelihood go "down the drain" if you fail? Or is the risk in question a minor or medium risk move? Understanding the difference can go a long way towards helping you decide just how cautious you need to be. The greater the potential downside of failure, the greater your preparation must be, period!
Finding the courage to take risks and think outside the box often comes down to motivation. If you want or need more courage to take the steps you need to take to be happy, then step back and think about what motivates you. Fully understanding what it is that motivates you will help you get the courage that you need. You can use these motivating factors to help you zero in and stay focused during times of weakness.
In many situations, the consequences of not taking bold action are so unpleasant especially over the long haul that you are left with no option other than to act. If you can't imagine not taking bold action and changing the course of your life, then you should have all the motivation and thus all the courage you need. So don't be afraid to think big in 2020. Then go ahead and plan meticulously to make the most of your out of the box thinking.

The Secret of Happiness - Wisdom of the Ages and Modern Sages On How to Achieve Happiness
What is the secret of happiness? While we may say "to each his own," we can also draw from the wisdom of the ages, and modern sages, to find some of the timeless principles of happiness. With that in mind, the most effective way I've found to improve happiness is to own your happiness and grow happiness right under your feet. And the beauty is, you can start your happiness journey from wherever you are.
10 Ways to Achieve Happiness
Here are 10 ways to help you on your happiness journey:
Drive from Happiness. Ultimately, happiness is a decision to drive from. One you flip this switch, you actually set the stage to find excuses to be happy instead of excuses why you are not.
Count what counts. Sometimes it's the little things that count the most. Don't let the good stuff pass you by, simply because you didn't notice. A simple way to do this is end your day by thinking of three of your favorite highlights of the day.
Focus on what's right, not on what's wrong. If you tend to walk into a situation, asking yourself, "What's wrong with this picture?", then challenge yourself to start asking, "What's right with this picture?"
Don't dwell on things. Dwelling is disempowering. To empower yourself, find a new way to look at the picture, and find some simple actions you can take. Action increases your power and momentum, and it's a way to break out of self-defeating patterns, and find new happiness habits.
Have a short-term view, AND a long-term view. You may not be happy in the moment, but will you be happy in the long-run? This is a fulfillment question. Sometimes the best you can do, is all you can do, and that's one way to make the most of any situation.
Model the best. Find people in your life that have that sparkle in their eyes, and that skip in their step. What comes naturally to them, may not come naturally for you. Get curious, and find out what makes them tick and how they deal with common scenarios. Get curious, and you'll find many people like to share what they are good at, including happiness... and it's contagious.
Spend more time in your values. First you have to get clear on what you value. For example, maybe you really value freedom, or maybe it's adventure, or maybe it's time. Spend more time in what you value, and you will start to improve your happiness. You don't always have to change "What" you do. Sometimes, you can just change "How" you do it. For example, if you like to learn then find a way on the job to learn a little more about what you do, as you do it.
Eliminate or embrace the stuff that holds you back. Sometimes that means accepting things as they are. Sometimes it means, not accepting it and directly addressing it or finding a way to make the most of it. If there is something that significantly holds back your happiness, then face it, and make it a project. Sometimes the best way to increase happiness is to reduce the things that sour our life.
Set your own happiness bar. We don't all walk around as rays of sunshine, blue skies, rainbows, and unicorns. The trick is to find what happiness means for you, and be OK with that bar, rather than beat yourself up if it seems like somebody else has a higher happiness capacity than you. That just might be their temperament. Instead of go against, the grain, work with what you have, and always remember that happiness is a personal thing.
Make it a skill. If you think of happiness as a skill, then you can continue to add to your bag of tricks, and get better over time. You can draw from books, people, and quotes to build an arsenal of happiness tools that you can use for any scenario. And, like any skill, you'll get better with practice. Additionally, if you have setbacks, always remember that happiness is a process, and you'll grow your skills, as you expand your happiness capacity and capabilities.
Have a Short-Term View and the Long-Term View on Happiness
Perhaps, one of the greatest insights of our modern times on happiness is that happiness should be addressed by two questions:
How happy are you?
How happy are you with your life?
The first question is about how happy are you in the current moment. The second question is more about fulfillment. While you may not find happiness in your moment to moment experience, you may be able to turn your challenges into opportunities and work on personal fulfillment and meaning. In this way, you write your story forward, and you can shape happiness for the long run.
Russell Bertrand on the Secret of Happiness
My friend, Dr.Michael, shared with me his thoughts on what Bertrand Russell believes about the secret of happiness. It went like this... "Bertrand Russell believes that unhappiness is largely due to a mistaken view of the world, that happiness is a basic human right - something to be pursued. He concludes that happiness lies in a personality" neither divided against itself nor pitted against the world' and the ability to swim with the 'stream of life'."
Wisdom of the Ages on the Secret of Happiness
To round out your perspective on happiness, you can draw from the wisdom of the ages, and modern day sages. You don't have to climb a mountain and ask a guru about the secret of happiness (although that could be fun.) Instead, you can gain deep insights from some of the various happiness quotes that help us find the secret of happiness. Here are some quotes that help us understand what truly is the secret of happiness:
"Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action." - Benjamin Disraeli
"Happiness cannot come from without. It must come from within. It is not what we see and touch or that which others do for us which makes us happy; it is that which we think and feel and do, first for the other fellow and then for ourselves." - Helen Keller
"To be truly happy and contented, you must let go of what it means to be happy or content." - Confucius
Find Your Way Forward
At the end of the day, the best you can do is drive from who you want to be and what experiences you want to create. You can use this rule, in all that you do, as a guideline to help you shape your way forward, and find meaning and happiness in whatever adventures life may throw your way.
