An Identity Crisis Is Vital For Growth Because It Occurs At The Edge Of Chaos And Harmony

Internal Conflict Triggered By Chaos

It was the developmental psychologist Erik Erikson who first coined the term identity crisis.

He formulated eight key stages one undergoes through their adolescent years based on their psychosocial development.

They are:

Stage 1 - Trust vs. Mistrust
Stage 2 - Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
Stage 3 - Initiative vs. Guilt
Stage 4 - Industry vs. Inferiority
Stage 5 - Identity vs. Confusion
Stage 6 - Intimacy vs. Isolation
Stage 7 - Generativity vs. Stagnation
Stage 8 - Integrity vs. Despair
Erikson believed a person's personality develops in a series of stages. His model differs to Freud's in that social interactions and relationships impact an individual's development and growth throughout their life.
Each stage builds on the previous one which creates the foundations for growth in the following years.

At each stage, a person experiences internal conflicts, thus creating a turning point in the individual's personality.

The conflicts are based on the understanding that an individual experiences growth or fails to develop these qualities.

In the educational book Key Concepts in Counselling and Psychotherapy: A Critical A-Z Guide to Theory author Vicki Smith gives a clear understanding of how an identity crisis can become a source of power within the individual's psyche: "He (Erikson) believed that we all have identity crises at one time or another in our lives and that these crises do not necessarily represent a negative state but can be a driving force toward positive resolution."

If they integrate the conflicts into their personality, the subsequent growth and development will serve them later in life. If they don't develop these abilities, they are likely to suffer an inhibited sense of self which dominates their life.

Erikson's understanding is that an individual becomes competent when moving through the eight stages and integrates the egoic self into their psyche.

In a similar vein, author Jan Frazier explains in The Freedom of Being: At Ease with What Is the need to transcend the ego by stepping outside the known sense of self: "In order to look at yourself, you have to step outside of it. Look not with the eyes of the ego, but with the eyes of presence."

The Ego Is Not Meant To Dominate Your Life

Many people identify with outer aspects of their life as the basis to their identity.

For example, an individual may believe their role is that of a mother and wife. Yet, if their husband is unfaithful and the marriage dissolves, they will question their identity since they no longer associate with that label.

Similarly, others presume their work, relationships, physical appearance, social and wealth status or performance are measures of their identity.

Regrettably, if these aspects are removed from their life, they experience an identity crisis because they created a persona around them.

I would argue these qualities do not shape your identity but are a vehicle in which to explore your life's narrative.

Your ego is the identity the mind constructs to define itself, yet this is a fictional narrative because external events can disrupt it.

Jan Frazier reaffirms how the roles you play do not construct your identity since there is an underlying presence beneath that: "The roles you play, the features you exhibit, the things you believe in - while they matter very much in the ordinary realm of human discourse - are not what you are. When presence senses itself within you, none of these things have any substance."

Your true identity lies beneath the shadow of the egoic self. An identity crisis is vital to an individual's growth because it allows for chaos and order to reveal one's authentic nature.

An identity crisis can be likened to the shell of an egg breaking open. The shell merely gives form to the ego so it can make sense of its role within society.

The ego is not meant to dominate your life, nor do you wish to banish it. It must be integrated with the authentic self to develop the wholeness of who you are.

Otherwise, the egoic self you once identified with is no longer something you can uphold.

Don't Try To Make Sense Of Chaos

To paint a contrasting view, psychotherapist and meditation teacher Loch Kelly writes in Shift into Freedom: The Science and Practice of Open-Hearted Awareness how consciousness creates a thinker to uphold the ego, thus forming a mistaken identity in the process: "Afflictive consciousness creates a thinker out of thinking and ego function, and this thought-based sense of self forms the core of mistaken identity. Nothing more than a self-referential loop of thinking about thinking, our mistaken identity is actually a continuous conceptual proliferation that creates solid things out of images and a solid self out of thinking."

What is essential is to unmask the egoic self so the pain, suffering and uncertainty are the underpinnings for future growth and development.

It is like the progress of performance athletes experience when training for the Olympics. They must push to the edge of their limits and discover their potential or risk remaining where they are.

If they push too far too soon, they may invoke physical injury that can sideline them. They may become depressed as a result because their identity is formed around their status of an athlete and performance.

However, from a developmental viewpoint, the experience can be vital to their performance if they can let go of their fixed narrative and former identity.

If you experienced an identity crisis, trust in the deeper psychological lesson guiding your personal development.

Don't try to make sense of the chaos, but surrender to the process, knowing whatever is breaking apart is doing so to make way for the true self to emerge.

To live a remarkable life, you must take consistent action in spite of your fears and doubts. Download a FREE copy of my motivational eBook, NAVIGATE LIFE and embark upon your journey of greatness today!

Critical Thinking: Has 'Spirituality' Become Another Escape?

The new age movement is said to have exploded during the 1970s and, since then, it has continued to grow. When the term 'new age' is mentioned, it usually relates to different spiritual or religious beliefs and practices.

When it comes to these beliefs, they include the view that everything in the universe is connected and everything is made up of the same energy, different beings exist and will provide guidance, and that human beings have the power to create their own reality. As for the practices, these include yoga, meditation, astrology, reiki and chanting.

A Number of Similarities

Therefore, although someone might not feel a connection to a god in the sky if they are spiritual, they might feel a connection to something else. In addition, there can be certain things that they do each day.

To someone like this, spirituality is going to be a far better fit and it won't have all of the weight or the negative associations that are part of organised religion. While organised religion can feel restrictive, spirituality can feel liberating.

The Same Story

However, even though there appeared to be this mass awakening during the 1970s and there are now millions of people on the planet that could be seen as being part of this movement, some people have argued that not a lot has changed. According to this view, there are more people than ever for who are 'awake' and yet, it is pretty much business as usual.

It can be hard to comprehend what is going on as if so many people are 'awake'; surely the world should be different? How can there still be so much dysfunction in the world?

Another Angle

If someone has taken this stance, they may even believe that the new age movement didn't just randomly grow in the 1970s. Instead, they could believe that there was a reason why this took place and it wasn't purely due to the fact that people's consciousness was changing.

This could be seen as something that took place because the elites needed a new way to control the masses. So many people had turned their back on the old form of control - organised religion - and now they needed something else, something far more appealing.

Pacifying the Masses

In this case, the new age movement was there to keep people distracted and to make them more tolerant of what was going on around them. If this was the plan back then, it could be said that it's still the plan now.

A lot has changed since that time, though, and one example of this is that corporations now have rooms where people can meditate. On the surface, this can seem like a great idea and a sign that peoples wellbeing is being taken seriously.

Looking Deeper

Another way of looking at this would be to say that this is purely about making workers more productive, while not having to change anything. There is then no need to look into why they would be so stressed and actually make real changes.

This is no different to how so many people are simply given drugs to handle their mental and emotional problems as opposed to real changes taking place in society. Again, it's a case of treating the symptoms as opposed to the cause - people are seen as the problem, not the society that they live in.

Back To the Main Point

Thus, the new age movement was and still is something that can serve those that want to keep everything the same. With that aside, the big question is: how could so little change if so many people are 'awake'?

One way to look at this would be to say that being 'awake' is just an identity that so many people have created for themselves and that very few people in comparison do the work that is needed to actually be awake. Someone can then do all the 'right' things and have the 'right' image, but their inner world could be just as toxic as someone who appears to be 'asleep'.

The Spiritual Ego

In other words, being 'awake' will just be a false-self their ego-mind has created that will enable them to avoid their own pain. This part of them, through having a dual nature, can give them the need to be seen as better and more 'evolved' than others.

Social media, for instance, provides the ego-mind with a platform where it can prove how 'spiritual' and 'evolved' it is. Only when the dual nature of the ego-mind is put to one side is it possible to realise that there is no such thing as being better or more evolved - each person on this earth is simply on their own path.

No More Running

Another term that has been used to describe a lot of the practices and beliefs that are connected to the new age is 'spiritual bypassing'. This illustrates how the ego-mind will hide behind any identity and use anything to avoid having to face pain.

This doesn't mean that the ego-mind is bad and needs to be 'killed off'; it enables one to have their own experience on this earth and it simply wants to keep them alive. So, the defences that it utilises to keep pain at bay can cause a lot of harm, but that is not their intention.

Awareness

If so many people have created an identity that allows them to see themselves as being 'awake' but their body is filled with emotional baggage, it is not going to be a surprise if the world doesn't really change. What is taking place at a deeper level will help to sustain what is taking place externally.

For their resonance to really change, and for them to no longer support what is going on externally, they will need to deal with their inner wounds. This won't be a time when it is all about 'love and light', far from it; there will be moments when it is the complete opposite.

There Is an Upside to Failure

Why Failure is Not the End

Sometimes when we fail we feel it is the end of the world. There is not one person on the planet Earth that has never failed in his life. The truth is that everyone fails once or many times in their life. You are not alone in this process of failing. It is normal to fail with your business, or your lover, or your friends. But, when you will fail, keep in mind that you are not alone in this and that you should keep moving forward.

There is a reason behind every failure

Failing is all about learning. It is all part of the process - the learning to move forward. Think of Albert Einstein to tried 1001 times to create the light-bulb. His vision and sense of purpose failed him forward.

It isn't always fun when things don't work out the way we planned. It is totally normal to feel de-motivated, without any enthusiasm and willingness to keep going in one thing that you have really want to feel some sense of purpose.

You know how they say: "If you fail 9 times, the 10th time will be a successful one"! The process of failing is difficult.

However, when you fail, feelings of disappointment, why try, de-motivation are seemed real. But, before you decide not to again try, keep in mind that failing is not the end.

When you think that you are on something, fail forward, work with enthusiasm, vision, and purpose, the end results will be what you expected.

Failure is Purposeful

It is often difficult to keep up the motivation. Your sense of purpose can seem illusory as if dreaming. It exists to remind you of what you really want from your life, career, relationship and friendship. When you envisage your dreams as purposeful, a spark of motivation and enthusiasm increases. Your heart is starting to beat faster and faster. You are feeling alive again!

All this is because your vision is an open door to your inner wisdom. Even if you fail once another path will be shown waiting for you just around the corner.

Nothing is lost, you just need to give yourself a chance to keep in your mind's eye all the situations you want to see, when everything seems so negative and without any sense of purpose.

You will feel tired of pushing yourself and stay motivated. Do not worry, nothing is lost.

Whenever you are unsure of what direction to take time to sit quietly. Ask your most pressing question and sit in your heart. Breathe deeply into your heart space, a place of knowing. Through practice you will change your neural pathways into a more coherent state. As well, the answer will come without all the negative self talk we often tell ourselves.

Alternative Work for Any Profession

We all need to earn additional income. Who would not want additional cash on their wallet? In this day and age, people from all walks of life need additional income, even those who have acquired their degree. What are the possible ways to earn for any profession?

Freelance Article Writer

The internet's full of it. Thank you for Google's update, a website should always have fresh content to make it relevant. A person who practices their profession is an expert on their own. Who would better describe teaching methods than a teacher? Who can better explain illness and expected treatments than a nurse or a doctor? Who can better identify problems in behavior than a psychologist? Information is a commodity that the internet is selling like pies. A professional can write a dichotomy of a variety of subjects. There is always a need for someone to explain an aspect of the profession and in terms that the layman can understand. This is one channel a professional can learn additional income.

Teaching

How do students become teachers, doctors or nurses? They were guided and taught by people who gained knowledge and skills from the same profession. A nurse can study and gain the needed certification to provide classroom teaching. The nurse does not need to stop being a nurse in a hospital or a clinic. The nurse can simply come in for the classroom lecture or supervise students in the clinical area.

Consultancy Services

The knowledge and skills that a professional acquires through years of experience in their field can be used to guide other professionals. For instance, a professional with a doctorate can provide consultancy services for a specified amount of fee to professionals that are completing their thesis or dissertations. They can also provide solutions for an individual or a company wanting to address conflicts in their organization.

Write a book

For someone who has a lot of time in their hands, writing a book can be an avenue for additional earnings. While this may take time for some, when the book gets published and the target audience starts subscribing or buying the book, the income will continue for years, until a new one is published.

An individual is limited only by their set of values. Additional income is always welcome, but it does not have to be a new job with better pay. A professional can always give advice and provide knowledge for a specified amount of fee without leaving the security of their current job.

Calm Guided Meditation to Gain Abundance, Love & Happiness | Bob Proctor

What To Do When You Feel Your Best Isn't Enough

There are essential factors that sustain solid an individual's development and advancement. Do you feel you give life your best, work hard, try hard, but still can't give yourself credit? While it appears to be anything but difficult to grasp mentally, freeing oneself from old negative messages is a journey of recovery which takes some serious work.

There is commonly a great deal of strain t in our way of life. We feel as though there is some kind of problem with us if, for instance, we're still single despite our age, never find another love after a broken marriage, don't make a specific measure of salary, don't have a huge group of friends, or don't look and act a specific path within the sight of others. The rundown could genuinely go on for eternity.

Now and again amidst all the pressures, we still appear to thoroughly overlook all the superb, interesting things about ourselves. We stall out in our minds and permit our inward pundit to totally destroy our confidence until such time that we detest ourselves for being not like everyone else.

Sometimes, we need other people's feedback to make us fully aware of the considerable number of things we beat ourselves up over that don't make a difference. We invest too much energy to get ourselves ahead of others. But still, it's not enough. We still want for more without realizing that we may regret these considerations every time.

We always compare ourselves to others, however, those individuals who appear to have everything don't bother to think about it. At the point when you take a gander at others through a perspective of empathy and seeing as opposed to judgment and desire, you are better ready to perceive the truth about them. They are wonderfully flawed people experiencing a similar general difficulties that we as a whole experience.

There is more right with you than amiss with you. Until you quit breathing, there's more right with you than amiss with you. As somebody who some of the time will in general focus in on the entirety of our apparent imperfections, it assists with recollecting that there are loads of things we like about ourselves as well-like the way that we live and breath and ready to clear new ways at whatever point we pick.

You need love the most when you believe you merit it the least. This was an ongoing revelation of mine, in spite of the fact that I'm certain it's been said commonly previously. I find that it is generally hard to acknowledge love and comprehension from others when I'm in a condition of outrage, disgrace, tension, or discouragement. However, embracing the above truth truly moved my viewpoint and caused me to understand that affection is really the best blessing we can get during such occasions.

We need to completely acknowledge and cause harmony with the present before we can reach and feel happy with what's to come. One thing I've found out about is that you can't completely feel happy with where you're going until you can acknowledge, recognize, and acknowledge where you are. Grasp and make harmony with where you are, and your excursion toward something new will feel significantly more serene, and fulfilling.

Concentrate on progress as opposed to flawlessness and on how far you've come instead of how far you have left to go.One of the greatest reasons for self-hatred is the recklessly determined twisted need to take care of business. We take a stab at flawlessness and achievement, and when we miss the mark, we feel exactly useless. What we fail to acknowledge is that moving in the direction of our objectives and being happy to put ourselves out there are achievements inside themselves, paying little mind to how frequently we fall flat.

Rather than chiding yourself for failing and lurching in reverse, give yourself a gesture of congratulations for having a go at, gaining ground, and coming the extent that you have. You can't despise your way into adoring yourself. Mentioning to yourself what a disappointment you are won't make you any progressively fruitful. Disclosing to yourself you're not satisfying your maximum capacity won't assist you with arriving at a higher potential. Disclosing to yourself you're useless and unlovable won't cause you to feel any increasingly commendable or adorable.

It sounds annoyingly straightforward, yet the best way to develop self esteem is to adore yourself. Pay little heed to what your identity is and where you stand and regardless of whether you realize you need to change. You are sufficient just like what you seem to be. What's more, self esteem is somewhat simpler each time you help yourself to remember that.

Why Intuition Will Become Our New Currency

Intuition Will Be The Strongest Currency

We are in the midst of an important change for all of humanity. In the past few months, the Coronavirus pandemic has affected our lives in unprecedented ways. We have been forced to reconsider how we interact with others and isolate ourselves in our own homes. There's still a lot to learn, but it's heart-warming to see nations working together to find a cure for the virus. Putting aside the political rhetoric, I believe humanity is on the precipice of expanding its consciousness. Have you noticed this sense of cooperation in your own country? Have you seen people help others such as the elderly, neighbours, friends and family?

There's a greater sense of collaboration that takes place when tragedy ensues. We awaken our kindred spirit to help others in altruistic ways. Mankind has been trading currency for as long as we can remember, which has contributed to modern civilisation and world economies. However, it has created greed and an uneven distribution of wealth. Money has created privileged people and under privileged societies. For this reason, I believe our intuition will become a form of currency in the post coronavirus world. What do I mean by this?

For those who have harnessed their intuition, they know it is a precious faculty. Our intuition is associated with the resonance of the soul and speaks in quiet whispers, instead of the loud voice of the ego. Therefore, as our consciousness awakens in the years ahead, our intuition will be the strongest currency amongst that shift. Intuition is like a GPS is to a car. If you've called upon your intuition, you will know it is reliable and the more we engage it, the greater it becomes. Can you relate to this? Have you used your intuition to make balanced decisions in your life? Did it work out in your favour?

Intuition Will Become Our Guiding Voice

Here's why intuition will be the strongest form of currency in the years ahead:

You cannot trade intuition.
Those who use it will benefit from it greatly.
Intuition is like your own fingerprint; each one unique.
It increases in power the more we use it.
It does not depreciate.
It cannot be lost or stolen.
It cannot be hacked.
It is reliable and accurate.
It has no agenda, unlike the ego.
What I'm suggesting is that our intuition will be a powerful super power right under our nose. Its uniqueness means we will make decisions exclusive to our lives, and the more we trust it, the better it works. Dr Catherine Wilkins echoes this sentiment in her book, Soul's Brain: The Neurology and Logic of Your Intuition: "Because of the unique nature of our neurology, our intuition will work differently from others, even though it's telling us about the same universe we all live in." The world will undoubtedly change for the better in the years ahead. I believe the shift in humanity's consciousness will give people back their power and intuition will become its guiding source. The power I'm talking about is one's authentic self and merging with our core being. I'm not talking about a spiritual apocalypse, but something simpler. It is about learning to trust ourselves, and the inherent power bequeathed to us by a benevolent universe. It will involve overcoming fear and a shift towards love, compassion and higher states of awareness.
This is not a prophetic glimpse into the future but based on my observations over the years, those with a strong intuition succeed in life. They trust their inherent power to make important decisions. I've witnessed this in my life, where my earlier choices were made by reason and logic alone. Nowadays, my intuition is a powerful ally which I call upon regularly. The key to awakening our intuition is to use it often and trust in the outcome. It requires having faith in our invested power and not second-guessing ourselves.

To live a balanced life, we ought to work harmoniously with our intuition. An awakening of consciousness refers to an expanded awareness of our thoughts. Knowing this, I'd like you to reflect on areas where you used intuition to make well-intentioned decisions. Think about how intuition communicates to you, unlike the forceful power of the ego. How can you better develop your intuition? Perhaps through your relationship with others? Your career, finances, health, etc? Put intuition to practice in the smallest ways and observe the outcome. Look for signs where intuition is calling you instead of reason and logic. It is when we awaken our inherent power, that intuition will become a guiding force in our life.

Remember "Why"

"He who has a why to live can bear with almost any how" -Friedrich Nietzsche

Have you ever been in a situation where you carry on with your life, perhaps you have a job, you get up every morning go to work, come back to your family and carry this on for a year or two and all of a sudden one day on a lonely day or a quite day you feel empty and ask yourself "Why, What and Who?" Why do you do the things you do? What do you live for? Who are you? and what do you really what to accomplish. Such a feeling of emptiness and questioning yourself is usually a self-reflection point in your life. Life can get routinal and at times we live on autopilot every day and forget the purpose regarding our lives. This in a long term or even short term can leave us feeling empty without hope.

I would like to remind you to be purposeful about the intent of your life. Remember why you are where you are and you do what you do. Why you have your spouse as a life partner, remember the reasons you had that made you feel that they are suitable to live life with you, why you feel important about your children and what you would like them to accomplish in life and what you would like to teach them. The most important person is you, what is your purpose, how would you like to be remembered in this life, what would you like to contribute. Having this form of self-reflection can help you live life with a sense of purpose and more intentfully. This will help you live happier and fulfilled. When you feel happier and fulfilled you are more likely to pursue and achieve your life goals.

Get up each day remembering why you do the things you do. Take time to meditate on your life, this will give you energy and the enthusiasm to pursue your dreams. Without remembering "why" you risk living a life that at times can feel purposeless. Without purpose, as human beings we are doomed to give up on everything and feel unhappier. Find your why, reach your goals and live a fulfilling life. The best time to start is not an hour later or tomorrow, start now.

Remember to remain inspired, to move all obstacles standing in your way of success and do not dare give up on yourself or your dreams.

Finding YOUR Courage in 2020

If you want to make big moves in 2020, you have to take risks. But taking risks isn't easy, and it puts most people in uncharted territory. Uncharted territory can, in turn, often feel dangerous and cumbersome. The human mind loves familiarity, as familiarity usually means safety in some form as well as access to resources. This love of familiarity is literally hardwired into our brains from childhood. During our evolution, those who could remember where water holes and predators were located, well, they had a better day!
Tossing all of this familiarity aside and deciding to take risks and think outside the box can be very difficult and feel scary. Yet, it is critical that you realize that this is exactly what you may need to do to reach whatever goals you have set for yourself. Taking bold and decisive action at the right moment in time may be what separates you from the fulfilling life you want and living a life that is less than what you dream. Oddly enough, walking away from the security of the known and into the insecurity of the unknown is likely what you'll need to do to achieve your goals and/or happiness.
Risks are not "one-size fits all" affairs. If you are not accustomed to taking any risks at all, then even a small risk may seem huge. Keep this fact in mind as you move forward. You need to first think about what the risk is you are contemplating and then measure that risk against reality. Will your business or livelihood go "down the drain" if you fail? Or is the risk in question a minor or medium risk move? Understanding the difference can go a long way towards helping you decide just how cautious you need to be. The greater the potential downside of failure, the greater your preparation must be, period!
Finding the courage to take risks and think outside the box often comes down to motivation. If you want or need more courage to take the steps you need to take to be happy, then step back and think about what motivates you. Fully understanding what it is that motivates you will help you get the courage that you need. You can use these motivating factors to help you zero in and stay focused during times of weakness.
In many situations, the consequences of not taking bold action are so unpleasant especially over the long haul that you are left with no option other than to act. If you can't imagine not taking bold action and changing the course of your life, then you should have all the motivation and thus all the courage you need. So don't be afraid to think big in 2020. Then go ahead and plan meticulously to make the most of your out of the box thinking.
