- Stress is when a physiological response is elicited from an external stimuli.
→ This means when a stressful situation (the external stimuli) is presented to you, it causes a (physiological) response from within your mind and body, which can be both psychological and physiological. The stress can also be short term or long term.
When most of us tend to think of stress we like to see it as a feeling similar to worry. Contrary to this belief, stress is not just a feeling and can cause harm if we allow our bodies to remain in the state of stress for too long. If a person is under constant stress, it can actually affect and change a person's whole biological and psychological state.
The Two Types Of Stress:
As most of us already know, stress is not always bad. There are actually two different types of stress that each of us experience, one is caused by positive events and the other is caused by negative events..
EUSTRESS- stress that is caused by a positive event. For example, the stress that occurs while watching a scary movie, riding a roller coaster, or getting a job promotion.
DISTRESS- stress that is caused by a negative event. For example, the stress that occurs from the loss of a loved one, getting hurt, or losing a job.
Hans Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome:
The effect that stress can have on the body was first described by Hungarian scientist Hans Seyle in 1936. Seyle theorized that chronic stress creates long-term chemical changes in the body, therefore stress could be a prominent cause of more serious diseases.
With this knowledge in mind Seyle began to dig even further into his research. From his lab work with rats and his memories of medical school, Hans Seyle identified what he referred to as The General Adaptation Syndrome. This describes the body's reactions to stress and can be broken down into three stages:
1) Alarm Reaction- This is when a person is disturbed by a stressor or external stimulus and the body first notices this stimulus. It is in this first stage that Cannon's fight or flight response comes into effect and hormones are released to provide the individual with enough energy to handle the given situation at hand. These hormones include adrenaline, norepinephrine, and cortisol. When released, there will be an increase in heart rate, breathing pattern, a tightening of muscles, and a constricting of blood vessels. All of this results in the creation of the energy you need to either fight or flee..
If the energy that is released from the fight or flight response continually remains unused through a lack of physical activity, it can actually have harmful effects on the body. Too much of the hormone cortisol can damage muscle tissue, cells, and can even lead to gastric ulcers, high blood sugar levels, and stroke. If there is too much adrenaline in the body, blood vessels of the brain and heart can be damaged, and this will increase the risk of suffering from a stroke or heart attack.
2) Adaptation- This is when the body begins to counteract the external stimulus and restore our bodies through recovery, renewal, and repair. This process is known as resistance, and it occurs almost immediately after the beginning of the alarm phase. This will continue until the stressful condition desists. Should a stressful condition continue, the body will remain in its state of arousal.
A person will begin to face problems when this process begins repeating too frequently, leaving little to no time for recovery to set in. If this occurs, the individual will move into the next stage..
3) Exhaustion- This is when the body has been depleted of the energy, both physical and psychological, that is required to fight off the stressor. This is particularly true for chronic stressors, because when fighting short-term stress, a person may not be entirely depleted of his or her energy. With the energy lost, the individual can no longer resist the stressor.
As a result, stress levels go up and remain high. The individual may experience adrenal fatigue, burnout, maladaption, overload, or dysfunction. Chronic stress can have a major impact on the body and mind. Nerve cells of organs and tissues can become damaged, memory and thinking can become impaired, and a person will be more likely to have anxiety and depression. High levels of stress can also contribute to rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
How to make Stress your Friend:
The only way to make stress become your friend is to change the way that you think and view it. In any given situation you can change the way your mind and body react to the stress.
I came across this idea while watching an episode of a show called "Ted Talks" Where a brilliant women named Kelly McGonigal explains her study on this stress theory. In this study about 30,000 people are tracked throughout 8 years. These people are asked 2 questions: How much stress have you had in the past year? Do you believe that stress can be harmful to your health?
People who had experienced a high amount of stress in the previous year had a 43% increase in risk of dying, but this was only true for the people who ALSO believed that stress was harmful.
On the other hand were people who did NOT believe that stress was harmful to their health. These people actually had the lowest percent risk of dying out of anyone, even the people who had experienced low amounts of stress.
What Does All This Mean?
This means that we can actually change the effects that stress has on us simply by changing our thought process about the subject. The way to do this is to begin viewing the stress responses as helpful to your situation.
Normally when we feel stressed out our body responds by releasing the hormones adrenaline, norepinephrine, and cortisol into your body. This results in an increase in heart rate, breathing patterns, constricting of blood vessels, and you can even begin to sweat. The trick is to view that pounding heart as your body preparing you for action. If you're breathing harder and faster, no problem, that's just your body supplying you with more oxygen. All of these responses are your body energizing you and preparing you.
Once you learn to change your mind and view these stress responses as helpful, you'll then be able to change the way your body reacts to it as well. In another study done, participants were taught how to view the stress responses as helpful, exactly how I mentioned in the paragraph above. When they put the participants into a stressful situation something amazing occurred..Not only did these people think differently about the situation but they're physical responses to the stress changed.
Normally, stress causes your heart rate to increase and your blood vessels to constrict. What the participants experienced was that their blood vessels stayed relaxed instead of constricting. More like a feeling of extreme joy or courage.
The participants from this study were actually able to make stress less likely to cause health issues simply by changing the way they think and react in the situation, and you can do this too..
The only way to beat stress, is to make it your friend.
All of these responses from the stress are your body preparing you with the energy you need to handle the situation at hand. There is no reason to fear stress, you are completely in control of the way your mind and body react to it.
Thanks for reading and good luck in your current endeavors!

How Complaining Can Make Us Fall Sick
Why do we love to talk about our problems? What do we get out of it? Whenever we catch up with friends over talking inevitably leads to some sort of complaints. It could be about work, our spouse, our children, our community and so on.
The thing is because we are repeating a pattern we do not realise the impact it has on us. For most people, unfortunately, this seems to be a normal habit of conversing.
So why do we feel the need to keep talking about our problems? Here are some probable emotional reasons:
Perhaps we want to feel validated? We want to feel like we mean something to someone. I was observing my daughter and her friends and they were gossiping and complaining about someone else and I realised that it was their way to feel validated. It was their way to feel like they are part of the in-crowd.
Another reason could be, we want to feel right. So by complaining, we are saying that we are right and the other party is wrong. So by complaining, it seems as if we have tipped the scales and somehow in an imaginary way we have become right, even if we were wrong!
Sometimes things do happen in such a way where we are wrongly accused. And the other party is just not listening. So we want to keep talking about it to make ourselves feel right again. In a way, we do it to fight for fairness or fair treatment but then we keep going into the loop of complaining!
Yet another reason why we enjoy complaining is that we are trying to get opinions. Why opinions? Because we are not sure whether the problem is us or the problem is with other people or whether the problem is circumstances. We share to get an opinion and if someone else agrees with us we think 'OK, so I am right, this problem I am having is not really my problem it is their problem'. It is a way to feel 'one up'.
What happens to the one listening to the complainer? For some of us, when we listen to other people's problems we may start to feel drained if we do not know how to draw psychic boundaries. They feel more energised because they are releasing and if full attention is given to them, we are giving even more power to their issues.
If we are an empathetic person, we are in for a lot of energy drainage because we feel like the other person wants so much from us -- they want our opinions, they want us to commit to a side. I'm just imagining some of the empaths now nodding away as you read this.
If we are the complainer when we keep talking about our problems we will only keep building negative energies within. We have these energy centres within our energy body and they are mostly aligned with our Endocrine System. Our Endocrine System is made up of our glands that control our hormones. When I say hormones, we are not just talking about women's hormones or sex hormones. Hormones are chemical substance produced in our bodies and they serve as messengers, controlling and coordinating activities throughout our body. For eg. adrenaline is a hormone and it comes under the control of our nervous system.
We have all experienced this phenomenon of being heartbroken. During this lovesickness, we feel the ache in our chest area, because feeling that way has caused an imbalance in our hormones and our Thymus gland sits right there and the love sickness actually caused us to compromise our immune system. This gland interesting is also known as the love gland!
So I teach my clients this: when you feel emotionally compromised, tap lightly on your chest, which activates your thymus gland. The tapping allows the gland function better and it can also help with your immunity. Just tap lightly up to about eight times, you don't have to thump like a gorilla! (I think gorillas really have the right idea on how to live right) You also do not need a reason to do this, you can do this all the time as a practice to help rebalance your hormones. So I do this all the time, especially when I am waiting in line with nothing to do!
In my next blog post, I will share strategies on how to draw psychic boundaries if you are the listener and what you can do more constructively if you are the complainer.
In the meantime, have a fabulous week tapping your chest away!

Feeling Helpless?
The threat of the coronavirus is taking the notion of the world's suffering in a whole new direction that could include all of us in a much more intimate way. Many people are expressing fears and concerns. More than ever it is important to strengthen our spirit and clarity of mind to deal what may be just the being of challenges we will face in the near future.
Someone said this to me during an interview recently: "I feel helpless in the face of the world's suffering. I don't know what to do about the pain I see all around me. It's driving me crazy."
Well, you know, it takes a lot of energy and attention to drive yourself crazy. If you redirect that energy away from "feeling helpless" and bring it into alignment with your desire to benefit, you may come up with some creative solutions. I'll explain.
"Helpless" is a judgment, not a feeling. But when we label judgments as feelings, we trap ourselves. Why? Because we're responding to the judgment as a feeling, as part of us.
If you think you're helpless, if you believe the thought that you're helpless, you're going to feel sad and discouraged. Anybody would. That just shows you work perfectly, it doesn't mean the judgment is part of your being.
You see, the thing is, our feelings are simply our own being vibrating. Just like there's a certain vibratory level that our organ of sight can perceive as sight, and a type of vibratory level that our ears can hear, we experience a different band of vibration as emotions. And that's just us, vibrating.
In the hypnotic nature of our mind -- take nouns, for example -- we label emotions like joy, sadness, anger or whatever, so we think they're separate things. So we may say, "I have a problem with anger, I'm going to solve my anger problem, I'm going to get rid of it." And so we repress the anger. As we continue along in our life, after a while we say, "Well, I'm not angry anymore, but I notice I'm not that joyful, either."
That's because we can't single out one emotion and repress it. That emotion is our capacity to vibrate in action. In order to repress an emotion we have to freeze our whole capacity to vibrate. That's the only way you can reduce an emotional response.
So that's the first thing. Our emotions are a manifestation of us vibrating in a certain way. They are our very being, vibrating. That's why we have absolute conviction in the truth of the emotion. That emotion is our very being, vibrating with life.
The vibration, in this case, is sadness and discouragement, because you believe the thought, "I'm helpless." But if you say, "I feel helpless," you're transferring the truth of vibrating, to that thought of helplessness. Then we're convinced because we think, "Am I helpless? Yeah, I can feel it right here in my chest."
But no. The true thought is, "If and when I believe I'm helpless... I feel sad and discouraged." Do I have to believe I'm helpless? Well, maybe I am! At that point, you could take a moment. You don't have to try to fight with it and come to some quick decision.
You can say to yourself, "OK, I'll be open-minded. I may be helpless, but it's only fair that you give me the evidence. If you give me the evidence that I'm helpless, then I'll believe it. But until you can give me the evidence, I'm not going to feel sad and discouraged. And I'm not going to drive myself crazy."
How to Help Yourself Out of Helplessness
1. Try this for a moment: Examine a familiar negative "feeling." Something like, "I feel like I'll never succeed" or "I feel like I'm not good enough" or "I feel like she is prettier than me."
2. Now notice the language of these "bad feelings." They each contain "feel like." Almost anytime someone says "I feel like," what comes after "like" will be a judgment, not a feeling. During the normal course of your day, catch these "feel like" thoughts and develop your ability to recognize that what comes after "like" is a judgment, not a feeling.
3. When you have some clarity about your "feel like" thoughts, practice restructuring them: "When I believe the judgment ____(fill in the blank), what do I feel?" Then ask, "what is the evidence that is convincing me to believe this judgment?" Notice what you discover.
I recommend you write this exercise in a journal so you can keep track of, and study, what comes up.
Two important tips: A feeling statement will contain an emotion: "I feel sad," or "I feel angry."
Also, make sure you don't answer the "What do I feel?" question with another judgment, such as, "I feel like a weirdo." If you do this, just restructure this statement too: "When I believe X and Y, what do I feel? Is there any valid evidence? Valid means accurate according to the laws of cause and effect, not according to the opinion of others. "That's what my father always told me" doesn't count as valid evidence!
This may seem surprisingly challenging at first because we are so habituated to labeling judgments as feelings. But keep at it. Enjoy your mind at work! You can teach it to work with wonderful clarity for your own benefit and be free of "helpless feelings" forever!

How To Remain Motivated Despite Uncertainties
Uncertainty puts my motivation and confidence at risk. The absence of prescience is one of the most widely recognized antecedents of disappointment. Since I knew the issues that might emerge, I was in an incredible situation to get ready for these difficulties and stay away from them by and large.
It's your chance to be proactive. Make an extensive rundown of activity steps you will follow to maintain a strategic distance from potential issues later on, and leave time in your calendar to execute these activity steps. Look for outside assistance when you need it.
Being readied won't just limit your odds of disappointment, yet will spur you to continue endeavoring to accomplish what you want. What might you do if things turned out badly? Try not to concentrate on the undesirable outcomes. Rather, place your consideration of options that would, at last, additionally lead to satisfaction and fulfillment. Remember the ultimate objective is to keep a receptive outlook.
This is an incredible exercise that will temper your sentiment of uncertainty. You will have a sense of security and empowered. You'll realize that a deviation from your original plan isn't a disappointment at all. Rather, it's a chance to investigate an entirely different plan of conceivable outcomes.
Recollect that you have learned and developed as an individual due to life's unlimited surprises. A portion of those shocks will be lovely, and some won't. At last, you are who you are today because of your life experiences. In other words, certainty is a fantasy. This is a significant acknowledgment that will assist you with taking a gander at the future unafraid. Achievement is going from disappointments to disappointments without losing enthusiasm.
In spite of this emphasis on our hankering for conviction, uncertainty has untold force when persuading individuals. Vulnerability about positive results gives us sentiments of energy and delight. We're progressively propelled to arrive at objectives when the prize is dubious than when it's sure. It's even the situation if the dubious prize is more terrible than the specific one!
Vulnerability is awkward for everybody. Regardless of whether it's political unrest or a rearrangement at your organization, workers who are worried about their future are probably going to be When you structure desires, you're setting yourself up for disillusionment. You can direct your tomorrow, yet you can't control the specific result. In the event that you anticipate the most noticeably terrible, you'll likely feel too negative and shut disapproved to see and take advantage of lucky breaks. When you anticipate the best, you'll make a dream that is difficult to satisfy.
Rather than anticipating that the future should give you something explicit, focus around what you'll do to make what you need to experience.distracted and ineffective. The greater part of us feel overpowered, upset, and restless when confronted with uncertainty.
Vulnerability is the main sureness there is, and realizing how to live with instability is the main security. In any event, when you think you've twisted into a comfortable casing of consistency, anything could change instantly. The main steady in life is that it will include change, and attempt as you may to control the future, now and then everything you can do is believe that whatever occurs, you can adjust and make its best.
At the point when form expectations, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. You can manage your tomorrow, however you can't control the specific outcome.
When you anticipate the worst, you'll likely feel too negative and close-minded to see and take advantage of lucky breaks. In the event that you anticipate the best, you'll make a dream that is difficult to satisfy. Rather than anticipating that the future should give you something explicit, focus around what you'll do to make what you need to experience.
The most troublesome piece of vulnerability is the failure to plan and feel in charge. All things considered, it isn't the vulnerability that annoys me; it's my inclination to lose all sense of direction in my sentiments about it. Get certain about your adaptability and sustainability skills. It's increasingly about guaranteeing yourself that you can deal with any trouble that may come.
Use stress reduction methods preemptively. If you're managing vulnerability, you most likely have worry in your body, regardless of whether it's not at the bleeding edge of your musings right now. After some time, that body pressure influences pulse, glucose, muscle strain, cholesterol level, breathing rate, and each organ in your body.
Concentrate on what you can control.Oftentimes, we ignore the seemingly insignificant details we can do to make life simpler while fixating on the large things we can't do. Practice care. At the point when you fixate on a tomorrow you can't control, you're too bustling judging what hasn't occurred at this point to completely encounter what's going on the present moment. Rather than seeing and valuing the excellence at the time, you get caught in a dread driven idea cycle about the potential for inconvenience down the line.
While reflection is the most ideal approach, it isn't the main methodology. If at any time you think you've made a controllable, unsurprising life for yourself, it's just a hallucination. Nothing stays the same forever.
Uncertainty can keep you up all evening, fixating on approaches to shield yourself from anything that may turn out badly. But then again, it might inspire you to acknowledge, live at the moment, and grasp the experience of living.
What's coming tomorrow probably won't be simple. What's certain is that it will come and when it arrives, you'll react to it, gain from it, and move into another tomorrow brimming with unlimited prospects.

Your Fast-Acting Tool For Negative Waves
As someone who leans towards the spiritual side of life, are you picking up on some of the negative vibes that have been going around?
Are you keeping peace in your heart as you go about your day during this interesting time? Before you know it, we get to the point where we look back on it and smile for all we have learned. Yet, right now when we are "in" it, how do we tune back in to our True Selves of happiness and delight if we don't have 20 minutes to meditate, take a hike or get a massage?
It is important that we get to the heart of the matter. This process can take you there.
This is easy and works for adults and children. It may work for you.
Here is a process that hundreds of 3rd and 4th graders have learned, as well as over a thousand adult professionals. This has helped CEOs, people in management, lawyers, people in the medical professions, teachers, and more. Many people have created more delight in their marriages, relationships with spouses children, family and co-workers with this simple but powerful process. It will help us all get through these interesting times.
NeuroCalm works negative feelings from any situation. It can also help with physical pain.
As you use this over time, you will find that it becomes automatic.
NeuroCalm in 3 easy steps:
For now, bypass the thoughts. Imagine it your mind is like a talk show host that has to say something, and tune it out. As Bob Newhart said in his famous YouTube, "Stop it!" Humor helps here. Sometimes (maybe not you) we take the thoughts that pass through our consciousness too seriously.
Close your eyes and take a deep breath. If you are spiritual/religious, connect with your Source. Pretend you are sending light from the Source to the feeling and the situation. See yourself and the situation bathed in light.
Be brave and feel. Notice the feeling in your body. This is between you and that feeling, not the commentary. Yes, it may feel uncomfortable for a short time. You are trading off feeling some discomfort now for the painful effects of ignoring it. Ignoring it makes it fester and grow, affecting your mental/emotional state and your health. Go ahead and feel it, fall into it. You can imagine you are holding a baby or a kitten/puppy and be compassionate with your feelings. Here you are listening to yourself. You may notice that the feeling changes. Follow it as it changes. Sometimes this is all it takes for the feeling to go away.
Ask the magical question. (I know, this sounds odd, humor me here, you will see the results... that's what matters) Ask the feeling the magical question "What do I need to know to let you go?" Notice the first thing that comes up for you. It may be a thought, an image, it could be a "knowing." That is your answer. Trust that first response.
Notice. Notice if the feeling is still there. It may be the same, different, or it may have left. If it is still there, repeat the process.
Sometimes these feelings leave quickly and do not return. With some issues in life, the feelings come back. Simply repeat the process.
Do you resonate with this? Try it for three days and see if it makes a difference for you. If so, teach it to others and to children. Imaging growing up knowing that your feelings are your own, and there is a way to peacefully learn from and release them.

Letting go from a spiritual perspective is liberating and healing, and the concept is one of many themes explored, explained and demystified in depth in 'the Joseph Communications', a series of books I highly recommend.

Are You Thinking Ahead to Post-Corona Life?
Many of you focus on how to survive the next few months.
I'm not knocking it - this is a crazy time, so it pays to have a strategy.
Having said that...
Are you thinking about what comes next?
For when the world returns to more-or-less normal?
Because it will return. With every crisis, folk said it would change everything forever. But let's not exaggerate it. 9/11 changed the world... and even so, things mostly returned to normal. Same again with 2008 and (for some Americans) Trump's election and a dozen other catastrophes.
The 'new normal' is always closer to the old normal than it might seem.
This pandemic is no different. It will break because pandemics always do. The first-hit countries are already bouncing back - the rest of us have to wait it out. I doubt the coronavirus will ever disappear, but it won't dominate forever. It can't.
I'm sure the smart entrepreneurs and executives are thinking ahead to when crowds become a thing again.
How about you?
When I say things will return to normal, I'm talking on average. For some folk, this experience will break them. They'll get used to isolation and keep up that habit, long into the future.
Why go out to restaurants, when junk food can arrive at your door?
What's the point of playing board games, after a few months of bingeing on video games?
Who cares about cinemas when the internet is right here?
Some folk will spend the rest of their lives exercising less, getting less fresh air and sun, and refusing physical contact at all costs.
The rest of you?
You're thinking of all the things you took for granted - even something as small as going to a restaurant with friends.
You're going to travel more and explore more.
Social distancing can't end soon enough, and when it does you're going to shake every hand. Maybe even hug more. Why not?
You're going to get out into nature, exercise more, have healthier hobbies and embrace every moment.
Maybe you'll even quit that job you hate (because look what getting locked in a box with recycled air got you?) or at least use this to work more flexibly.
I'm lucky enough to have money coming in still, so I'm saving money for some training and travel. You better believe I'm watching the number of active cases in each country, looking forward to the day we're all free again.
That day will come slower if you languish.
If you atrophy on the couch.
If you invest in yourself, though?
In your mind, your body, your emotions and your finances?
You'll be out the door and in the sunshine while everyone else is rubbing the sleep from their eyes.
